JUNE 3, 2014 HAVE A SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE SUMMER! FOR THOSE WHO ARE RETIRING WE WILL MISS YOU! REMEMBER TO SEND US YOUR MEMBER PLAN.
RONDA'S CORNER
Well, here we are nearing the end of another school year. This summer is going to be extremely exciting here. We are going to be firing up Overdrive for the districts who have decided to join us in this project; completing another big project so that finding what you need from Learning Resources will become a Snap and saying "goodbye" to our Program Manager, Brian Crawford, and "Hello" to whomever fills his position.

I wanted to share a poem written by an 8th grader in one of our schools. It was written for an anti-bullying project and she wrote it for her librarian. The author wishes to remain anonymous but asked the poem to be shared....
Here you are,Surrounded by books,That make my day.I read these stories,Get lost in their pages,Find joy in the simplest of things,My message here to you is..."Books are my family,My friends,And I disappear inside them,To escape the people who insistedI disappear for real."Books saved me from bullies,And you gave me those books,That saved me,That saved my life,Thank you.I only ask one thing of you,Pass this poem onGive it to your family,Your friends,Anyone who will listen.Post in on a website,Something,Just as long as the message is heard.Books saved my life from bullying.Give a book,Save a life.

This session will explore ways to use the web-based assessment tool TRAILS (Tools for Real-time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) that was developed through a project at Kent State University. The web-based assessments are based on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th grade standards and measure students’ strengths and weaknesses in five categories related to information literacy: developing a topic; identifying potential sources; developing, using, and revising search strategies; evaluating sources and information; and recognizing how to use information responsibly, ethically, and legally. A variety of formats allow flexibility in usage from full length tests for pre/post testing to 10 question category assessments that allow teachers and librarians to target specific skills. The presentation will demo the site and explore ways it can be used in conjunction with information literacy lessons. Participants will also learn about improvements and
additions to TRAILS to be available in September 2012. Following the presentation, participants will create a TRAILS account, view assessments, and come back with a plan of how they will use TRAILS in their school, or how they will increase usage in their school. The discussion will utilize the chat in Adobe Connect and a KBC group.""
